Arena Base Design

Your riding surface relies on a quality base for support.

Every great riding surface begins with a properly engineered and constructed base.

Building the arena base properly is critical

Even the highest-quality footing surface will not perform to its full potential over a poorly constructed base. A properly engineered and laser-graded base will create a resilient foundation that supports footing and efficiently drains rainwater. Constructed properly, the base will provide resistance to shifting and uneven settling and ensure elements of the subgrade don’t mix with the footing – which can lead to variability in performance, and risk permanent damage to the footing. Build it right from the start, as the arena base is the most difficult and costly component to modify once the arena is complete.

What type of arena base is right for you?

Traditional Base

As the name suggests, this proven outdoor arena construction method can be simple and economical. A skilled arena contractor builds a slightly sloped arena using a properly compacted sub-base and base layer made from carefully selected materials. This structure helps absorb repeated riding impact loads while allowing majority of the rainwater to flow across the surface.

Key Success Factors:

  • Proper slope and laser graded
  • Well-compacted base
  • Selection of buffer layer materials
  • Perimeter drainage
  • Equipment used and contractor skill

Free-Draining Base

This outdoor arena design uses carefully selected crushed stone as the base, offers outstanding performance by allowing rainwater to drain into the base layer and be carried away through drainage pipes. This free-draining system is ideal for large arenas, training facilities, and competition venues where increased uptime is essential.

Key Success Factors:

  • Proper slope and laser graded
  • Clean crushed stone, well-compacted
  • Separation barrier, allows water to pass through
  • Perimeter drainage
  • Equipment used and contractor skill

Ebb-and-Flow Base

A properly designed and constructed ebb-and-flow arena can be a game changer. This system uses pumps and pipes to add or remove water from below the footing, maintaining the proper moisture level in the footing through capillary action. Although initial setup costs can be higher, long-term benefits include eliminating the need for overhead watering systems, reducing water use, delivering more consistent ride performance, and increasing arena uptime.

Key Success Factors:

  • Contractor experience with ebb-and-flow
  • Tunable control system, number of pumps, sizing
  • Capillary sand and rock to support system
  • System capability to winterize, ramp up in spring
