Arena Maintenance

How to maintain a safe, consistent, and high-performing riding surface.

FootingFirst® blends are engineered for lasting durability and performance when coupled with proper arena maintenance.

Protect your investment with proper footing maintenance

A proactive maintenance program will help extend the life of your arena and provide a safer, more predictable riding surface. FootingFirst® provides expert guidance on developing an appropriate grooming schedule, establishing effective moisture management practices, and annual inspections to help preserve footing performance.

Grooming Your Arena

Proper grooming is essential to maintaining a safe, consistent, and high-performing riding surface. Even the best footing can lose its consistency if it isn’t maintained properly. Routinely inspect and maintain your harrow and keep replacement wear parts on hand. Remove jumps at least once per week before grooming and rake riding tracks 1-2 times per week to prevent uneven wear. FootingFirst® will recommend the right equipment, settings, and routine for the best long-term outcomes.

Water Management

If you choose a water-dependent footing blend, proper moisture management is critical for dust control, footing stability, and overall performance. Water the arena evenly to avoid inconsistent footing conditions and consider an automated irrigation system for optimal results. Insufficient or uneven watering can cause the footing to become loose, dusty, and inconsistent. If moisture management is a challenge, FootingFirst® dust-free blends may be the optimal choice for you.

Manure Removal

Regular manure removal helps protect footing quality and extend its lifespan. As manure breaks down, it contributes to dust, organic buildup, and surface compaction. Frequent removal of manure from the arena footing promotes a cleaner, safer, and more consistent riding environment.

Filter Fabric

Filter fabric separation layer between arena base and footing

A heavy-duty filter fabric serves as a separation layer between the arena base and the footing surface. Improper harrowing, inadequate watering, prolonged placement of jumps in one location, and excessive lunging in the same area can damage the fabric. If the black filter fabric becomes visible at any time, contact FootingFirst® immediately.

Annual Maintenance

Professional maintenance is recommended annually to help ensure long-term footing performance, consistency, and safety. FootingFirst® works with experienced installers who understand service requirements and offer annual maintenance and on-demand service. FootingFirst® would be happy to introduce experienced professionals for your independent evaluation.

Winter Use

The arena may be used during winter months as long as the footing is not frozen. For ice management, consult FootingFirst® regarding the use of products such as Potassium Chloride or Magnesium Chloride. Snow removal is generally not recommended, as it may disturb or damage the footing surface. Most competitor footing blends are not winter resilient, FootingFirst® blends are proven to withstand stress from freeze thaw cycles.
